In Detail

Why Readeck on Your Own Server?

Read-it-later services come and go – your saved articles stay on your server. Readeck is open source, very lightweight and runs even on the smallest package.

Readeck saves the content of articles and web pages including images, so you can read them without ads and even after the original has disappeared. You highlight passages, add labels, sort into collections and find everything again with full-text search. You export articles and collections as e-books for your reader, and the browser extension saves pages with one click. The panel creates your admin user with the name you chose and a generated password right away – the onboarding page, where the first visitor would otherwise become administrator, is never left open. With a domain, Readeck runs under HTTPS; you can also add or change the domain later in the panel. With a minimum of 256 MB of RAM and 5 GB of storage, Readeck is one of the most lightweight apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Is Readeck an alternative to Pocket?
Yes. Readeck serves the same purpose – saving articles to read later – and runs on your own server. You can bring over existing collections with the import feature, for example from Pocket or Wallabag exports.
How do I save articles from my phone?
Readeck runs in the browser and adapts to small screens. For Firefox and Chrome there is a browser extension that you connect to your server’s address.
Can I read articles on my e-reader?
Yes. Readeck exports single articles or whole collections as EPUB files that you transfer to your e-reader.
Is the smallest package enough?
Usually yes: Readeck needs at least 256 MB of RAM and 5 GB of storage. With a very large number of saved articles with images, storage needs grow accordingly.
