Why Paperless-ngx on Your Own Server?

Invoices, contracts and letters do not belong with a third-party service. On your own server they live in Frankfurt, are reachable from anywhere, and there is no licence fee.

Paperless-ngx takes your scanned documents and PDFs, recognises the text via OCR and stores them as a searchable archive. Using tags, correspondents and document types it files new documents automatically and learns from your previous assignments. You upload documents in the browser, via the apps or by fetching them from a mailbox. The panel installs Paperless-ngx including its database, creates your admin user and, if you like, sets up your domain with HTTPS. Text recognition needs compute and the archive grows with every document – that is why we recommend a package with more storage than the technical minimum.

How do documents get into Paperless-ngx?
By upload in the browser, via phone apps that send documents to Paperless, or by e-mail: Paperless-ngx can fetch a mailbox and import attachments automatically.
Does Paperless-ngx recognise German text?
Yes. Text recognition is based on Tesseract and supports German, English and many other languages. Afterwards you find every document via full-text search.
How much storage do I need?
The app requires at least 20 GB. Paperless stores the original and a searchable PDF, so for a growing archive we recommend 50 GB or more.
How do I back up my archive?
With the server backups in the panel and additionally with the Paperless-ngx export command, which writes all documents with their metadata to a directory you can copy elsewhere.
