In Detail

Why BookStack on Your Own Server?

Internal documentation often holds processes, access paths and customer details. On your own server in Frankfurt it stays with you, BookStack is open source, and there is no per-user licence fee for your team’s accounts.

BookStack organises knowledge like a library: shelves hold books, books hold chapters and pages. You write in the WYSIWYG editor or in Markdown, every change lands in the revision history, and roles decide who may see and edit what. The panel installs BookStack with its own MariaDB database and turns the default account BookStack normally starts with straight into your admin login – with your e-mail address and a generated password you look up in the panel. Well-known default credentials are never left open on the internet. If you enter a domain pointing to your server, BookStack runs on HTTPS right away; without a domain you reach it via the IP address and add the domain later in the panel. For a small team, a package with 1 GB of RAM is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

How many resources does BookStack need?
At least 1 GB of RAM and 5 GB of storage. Images and attachments are stored on the server – if you expect many files, choose a package with more NVMe storage.
Can I write in Markdown?
Yes. Alongside the WYSIWYG editor, BookStack offers a Markdown editor with preview. Pages, chapters and books can also be exported as PDF, HTML, Markdown or plain text.
How does my team get access?
As admin you create users and assign roles. For invitation e-mails you add an SMTP server to the configuration; BookStack also supports login via LDAP, SAML 2.0 and OpenID Connect.
How do I back up my content?
With the server backups in the panel. In addition, you can dump the MariaDB database over SSH and export individual books as files.
