In Detail

Why Docmost on Your Own Server?

Cloud team wikis usually charge per user and keep everything with the provider. Docmost is open source – on your server in Frankfurt you only pay for the machine and decide yourself who gets access.

Docmost organises knowledge in spaces where you nest pages as deep as you like. Several people edit the same page at once, comments and page history show who changed what, and you embed draw.io, Excalidraw or Mermaid diagrams right in the text. The panel installs Docmost with a PostgreSQL database and Redis and completes the initial setup immediately: the workspace exists, your account with your e-mail address is its owner, and the panel generates the password. So there is no open setup page where someone else could create a workspace first. With a domain, Docmost runs on HTTPS right away, without one via the IP address at first; you can add the domain later in the panel. For e-mail invitations you still add SMTP credentials to the configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Is Docmost an alternative to Confluence or Notion?
For wikis and documentation, yes: page tree, spaces, real-time co-editing, comments and history. Docmost focuses on writing and organising knowledge – the best way to see whether you miss any special features is to try it with your own content.
Can I bring existing content?
Docmost imports Markdown and HTML files. In the other direction you export pages as Markdown or HTML, so your content is never locked in.
How many resources does Docmost need?
1 GB of RAM and 5 GB of storage are enough to get started. As your team grows or you upload many files, choose a larger package.
How do I back up my content?
With the server backups in the panel. Over SSH you can also dump the PostgreSQL database and back up the data directory with the uploaded files.
