In Detail

Why Penpot on Your Own Server?

Drafts, components and prototypes stay on your server in Frankfurt. Penpot is open source, runs entirely in the browser and, self-hosted, costs no per-seat licence.

Penpot is a design and prototyping tool in the browser – comparable to Figma, but open source and built on open standards such as SVG. You design interfaces with components and flex or grid layouts, link screens into clickable prototypes, and developers read measurements and code in inspect mode. The panel installs Penpot with PostgreSQL and Valkey, turns off open sign-up and creates your account with your e-mail address and a generated password. Telemetry to the Penpot project is disabled. If you enter a domain, Penpot runs under HTTPS; you can also add or change the domain later in the panel. For larger files and several people working at once, more than the 2 GB RAM minimum is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Is Penpot an alternative to Figma?
For many teams, yes: Penpot offers components, auto layout with flex and grid, prototypes and an inspect mode for developers. It is open source and runs on your own server instead of someone else’s cloud.
How do other people get an account?
Open sign-up is turned off so that strangers cannot register. You create further accounts via SSH with the create-profile command in the backend container.
How many resources does Penpot need?
At least 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of storage. With many images, large files or several simultaneous users we recommend a larger package.
How do I back up my designs?
With the server backups in the panel, which cover the database and assets. You can also export individual files from Penpot and keep them locally.
