Why OpenProject on Your Own Server?

Your team’s project plans, tasks and hours stay on your server in Frankfurt instead of in someone else’s SaaS tool. The Community Edition is open source with no per-user fee – you only pay for the server.

OpenProject combines classic and agile project work: work packages with a Gantt chart and dependencies, boards for Scrum and Kanban, time tracking, meetings and a wiki per project. The panel installs OpenProject 16 as a Docker container with an integrated PostgreSQL database and a German interface by default. The “admin” user gets a generated password, shown in the panel, and your e-mail address – the forced password change on first login is skipped. Enter your domain right at installation, because OpenProject writes the host name and HTTPS into its configuration; it cannot be added in the panel later. The first start sets up the database and takes a few minutes. With at least 4 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage, OpenProject is one of the larger apps.

Answers to the most important questions

Can I add a domain later?
No, for OpenProject only during installation. If you want OpenProject under your own domain with HTTPS, set up the DNS record first and enter the domain when installing.
Are all features included?
The Community Edition is installed, with Gantt, boards, time tracking, wiki and meetings. Some add-on features belong to the paid Enterprise edition and are not included.
How many resources does OpenProject need?
At least 4 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage. For larger teams and many attachments we recommend a package with more memory and space.
How do I invite my team?
As administrator you create users in the administration area or invite them. For invitation e-mails to arrive, configure an SMTP server in the settings.
