In Detail
Why MediaWiki on Your Own Server?
MediaWiki is open source, proven over many years and highly extensible with extensions and skins. With root access to your own server you install every extension your wiki needs.
MediaWiki brings what you know from Wikipedia: wikitext, revision history, talk pages, categories, templates and watchlists; the VisualEditor ships as a bundled extension you can enable. The panel installs MediaWiki with a MariaDB database using the command-line installer instead of the web wizard – so no open installation page is left behind. You choose your admin username in the install form, and the panel generates the password. The LocalSettings.php configuration file then lives on the server, so you adjust extensions, logo and permissions over SSH. The content language is preset to German; each user can set the interface language in their preferences. With a domain the wiki runs on HTTPS, without one via the IP address; you can add the domain later in the panel.
