In Detail

Why Semaphore UI on Your Own Server?

Your automation server needs SSH access to your systems – that belongs on a server only you manage. Semaphore UI is frugal: 512 MB of RAM is enough to get started.

Semaphore UI is an open-source interface for starting Ansible playbooks, Terraform and OpenTofu configurations and shell scripts from a Git repository. Every run is logged with its full output, so you can always see who rolled out what and when. Tasks can repeat on a schedule, and credentials such as SSH keys and passwords are stored encrypted in the key store. The panel installs Semaphore UI with an SQLite database, creates your admin user with a generated password and generates a dedicated key for encrypting the credentials. If you like, the panel sets up your domain with HTTPS, now or later. You manage teams and their permissions per project right in the interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Which tools does Semaphore UI support?
Ansible, Terraform and OpenTofu as well as shell scripts. You create templates for them per project and link them to a repository, inventory and credentials.
Is Semaphore UI an alternative to AWX or Ansible Tower?
For many teams, yes: Semaphore UI covers runs, schedules, history and permissions while being much leaner. AWX offers more features but also needs considerably more resources.
How does Semaphore UI reach my servers?
Over SSH: you store an SSH key in the key store and add the target servers to the inventory. The target servers must be reachable via SSH from your root server.
Where is my data stored?
Semaphore UI stores projects, history and keys in an SQLite database in a Docker volume on your server. Back up the server regularly with the server backups in the panel.
