In Detail

Why Home Assistant on Your Own Server?

No Raspberry Pi heating up at home, no SD card that gives out one day: Home Assistant runs on NVMe storage in a data centre, and you are root. Ideal for cloud devices, dashboards and automations – or as a second instance next to your setup at home.

Home Assistant is an open-source home automation platform with integrations for countless devices and services, automations, scenes and fully customisable dashboards. The panel installs Home Assistant as a Docker container and creates your owner account right away with the username you chose and a generated password – so the onboarding page, where the first visitor would otherwise become the owner, is never left open on the internet. If you enter a domain, Home Assistant runs under HTTPS with a Let’s Encrypt certificate; you can also add or change the domain later in the panel. Worth knowing: a rented server is not part of your home network. It cannot control Zigbee or Z-Wave sticks or devices that are only reachable on your local Wi-Fi directly – only through the manufacturers’ cloud integrations or a VPN connection to your home. Because this is the container variant, there are no add-ons from the Supervisor store; as root you simply run additional services yourself with Docker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Can the server control my devices at home?
Not directly: the server sits in a data centre, not in your home network. Devices with a cloud connection work through their integrations; for local devices, Zigbee or Z-Wave you need a VPN connection or an additional instance at home.
Are there add-ons like in Home Assistant OS?
No. Home Assistant is installed as a container, and the add-on store is part of the Supervisor in Home Assistant OS. Instead, you run services such as an MQTT broker as separate Docker containers on your server.
How many resources does Home Assistant need?
The app requires at least 1 GB of RAM and 10 GB of storage. With many integrations and a long history, a package with more memory is worth it.
How do I back up my configuration?
With the server backups in the panel and additionally with Home Assistant’s built-in backup feature. That also lets you move the configuration to an instance at home.
