In Detail

Why Vaultwarden on Your Own Server?

Your password vault lives on a server only you manage. Vaultwarden is light on resources and has no licence fee – even the smallest package is enough for you, your family or a small team.

Vaultwarden is a lean server written in Rust that implements the Bitwarden API. So you use the familiar Bitwarden apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS and the browser extensions, and just enter your server’s address there. Because password managers require HTTPS, you enter a domain pointing to your server during the install – the panel sets up the Let’s Encrypt certificate. Open sign-ups are switched off and your e-mail address is invited during the install; you use it to create your account in the app. You invite more people through the Vaultwarden admin panel, whose admin token you find in the server panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Do I really need a domain?
Yes. The Bitwarden apps require an encrypted connection, so the panel only installs Vaultwarden with a domain. An A record pointing to your server’s IP is enough; the HTTPS certificate is set up automatically.
Can I use the official Bitwarden apps?
Yes. Vaultwarden is compatible with the Bitwarden clients. When logging in, choose “self-hosted” in the app and enter your server’s address.
How do I invite more people?
Open sign-ups are off for security reasons. In the Vaultwarden admin panel (under /admin) you invite more e-mail addresses; the admin token for it is in the server panel.
How do I back up my vault?
Create regular backups, for example with the server backups in the panel. In addition, every Bitwarden app can create an encrypted export of your vault.
