In Detail

Why a Docker Registry on Your Own Server?

With your own registry your images live on your server instead of with a third party, and you are not bound by the pull limits of public services. Your package determines how much room you have for images.

The app installs the official registry, version 2 – the service that docker push and docker pull talk to. The panel sets up a login with your username and a generated password; without logging in, nobody can upload or download images. Deleting via the API is enabled so you can clean up old tags. There is no web interface: you work with docker login, docker push and docker pull. Ideally you install the registry with a domain pointing to your server – the panel then sets up HTTPS and Docker connects without extra configuration. Without a domain you would have to add the address as an insecure registry on every client. Your images determine how much storage you need, so a package with enough NVMe storage pays off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

Is there a web interface?
No, the registry is a pure service for the Docker client. You manage images with docker push and docker pull; the registry API lists the repositories under /v2/_catalog.
Why is a domain recommended?
By default Docker requires HTTPS for registries. With a domain the panel sets up a Let’s Encrypt certificate; without one you would have to add the registry as an “insecure registry” on every client.
Can I use the registry in CI/CD?
Yes. GitLab CI, GitHub Actions and other systems log in with docker login just like your machine; you store the username and password there as secret variables.
How do I free up storage?
Delete images you no longer need via the registry API, then run the registry’s garbage collection via SSH. Only then is the disk space freed.
