Why Seafile on Your Own Server?

Seafile concentrates on one thing – syncing files quickly and reliably – and needs few resources to do it. Your data sits on your server in Frankfurt, not with a third-party cloud service.

Seafile organises files in libraries that you sync individually, share with others or publish via a link. Every change is versioned, so you can restore older states and deleted files. The panel installs Seafile with a MariaDB database and Memcached and creates your admin account with your e-mail address and a generated password. You enter a domain with HTTPS directly during the install, because Seafile stores its address at that point; it cannot be switched later in the panel. Seafile clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS connect using your server address.

Can I change the domain later?
Not in the panel – the address is fixed during the install. So if you want to use Seafile with a domain, enter it right when installing.
Which apps are there for Seafile?
There are sync clients for Windows, macOS and Linux as well as apps for Android and iOS. With SeaDrive you can also mount libraries as a drive without storing everything locally.
How does Seafile differ from Nextcloud?
Seafile specialises in fast file sync and needs fewer resources. Nextcloud adds calendars, contacts and many extra apps – you can install either with one click.
How much storage do I need?
Seafile itself requires 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage; the rest is taken by your files and their versions. So choose a package with headroom for the version history.
