In Detail

Why Owncast on Your Own Server?

On your own stream you decide on rules, design and chat – no platform puts ads in front of it or changes the terms. Viewers need no account, a browser is enough.

Owncast is a live streaming server with its own viewer page and built-in chat. You stream via RTMP from OBS or other streaming software to your server, Owncast converts the video for your viewers and delivers it in the browser. During the install the panel replaces the well-known default password of the admin area with a generated password that you find in the panel. In the admin area under /admin you create a stream key, give your channel a name and description and set quality levels. If you like, the viewer page runs on your domain with HTTPS. The servers have no graphics card, so conversion runs on the CPU – several high-resolution quality levels need correspondingly many vCores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

How do I connect OBS to Owncast?
In OBS choose “Custom” as the service, enter rtmp://your-server-ip:1935/live as the server and the stream key you created in the Owncast admin area.
How many viewers can the server handle?
That depends mainly on bitrate and bandwidth, not on a fixed limit. For many viewers a moderate bitrate and few quality levels help.
Do I need a graphics card?
No. Owncast converts the stream on the CPU. A small package is enough for a single quality level; for several levels in 1080p choose more vCores.
Do viewers need an account?
No. Viewers simply open your page in the browser and can write in the chat with a name of their choice.
