Why Immich on Your Own Server?

Your family photos end up on your server in Frankfurt instead of with an advertising company. There is no storage subscription that runs full – how much space you have depends only on your package.

Immich backs up photos and videos from Android and iOS automatically in the background and shows them as a timeline, in albums and on a map. The built-in image recognition finds faces and subjects, so you can search for “beach” or for a person. The panel installs Immich with a PostgreSQL database, a Valkey cache and the machine-learning service. The install creates your admin account right away and the panel generates the password – there is no open setup page that someone else could find first. If you like, you set up a domain with HTTPS, also later in the panel. Because image recognition needs memory, Immich requires at least 4 GB of RAM; for a growing photo collection pick a package with plenty of NVMe storage.

How much memory does Immich need?
At least 4 GB of RAM, because face and object recognition run alongside the server. With large collections and several users, more RAM makes a noticeable difference.
Are there apps for Android and iOS?
Yes. The Immich app is available for Android and iOS; once you enter the server address it uploads new photos and videos automatically. With your own domain the connection runs over HTTPS.
Can several people use Immich?
Yes. As admin you create more users in Immich, and each has their own timeline. You can share albums and photos with others or via a link.
Does Immich replace a backup?
No. Immich is your photo library, not your only copy. Also use the server backups in the panel or keep the originals in a second place.
