Why Rocket.Chat on Your Own Server?

Your conversations, files and channels live on your server in Frankfurt instead of in a chat provider’s cloud. You decide who gets an account, which integrations run and how long messages are kept.

Rocket.Chat is a chat platform for teams: public and private channels, direct messages, threads, file sharing and integrations via webhooks. The panel installs Rocket.Chat together with a MongoDB database, set up as a replica set as Rocket.Chat requires. You choose the admin username in the install form; the panel generates the password and shows it to you there. The setup wizard is already completed, so nobody else can take over your fresh install. You can enter a domain during the install or add and change it later in the panel – with a domain, Rocket.Chat runs on HTTPS with a Let’s Encrypt certificate. The Rocket.Chat desktop and mobile apps then simply connect to your server’s address. Plan for at least 2 GB of RAM; larger teams benefit from more.

Answers to the most important questions

Do I need my own domain?
No, after the install Rocket.Chat also runs on the server’s IP address and port 3021. For the apps and encrypted connections we recommend a domain though – you can add it later in the panel, and the HTTPS certificate is set up automatically.
Are there apps for Rocket.Chat?
Yes, Rocket.Chat offers apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. On first launch you enter your server’s address.
How do other people join?
As admin you invite users by e-mail in the administration or create accounts directly. The registration form is switched off after the install; you can open it in the account settings.
How do I back up and update Rocket.Chat?
Use the server backups in the panel; via SSH you can also export MongoDB with mongodump. New versions come via the app update in the panel, which pulls fresh images.
