Why GoToSocial on Your Own Server?

With your own instance your Fediverse address belongs to you and does not depend on the rules or survival of someone else’s server. GoToSocial needs little memory and suits just you or a small group well.

GoToSocial is an ActivityPub server: you follow accounts on Mastodon and other Fediverse services, they follow you, and posts travel across servers. GoToSocial deliberately ships without its own posting interface; instead you use apps that speak the Mastodon API, such as Tusky or Ivory. Because account names look like @name@your-domain, you enter a domain pointing to your server during the install – it is fixed afterwards. The panel sets up HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt, creates your account as a confirmed admin and generates the password. Open registration is disabled and data is stored in an SQLite database. 512 MB of RAM is enough to start; cached media from the Fediverse takes up some disk space over time.

Can I follow people on Mastodon?
Yes. GoToSocial speaks ActivityPub like Mastodon, so you follow accounts on Mastodon instances and other Fediverse services, and they can follow you.
Which apps do I use with GoToSocial?
Apps that support the Mastodon API, for example Tusky on Android or Ivory on iOS. When logging in, enter your domain as the server.
Can I change the domain later?
No. Fediverse accounts are tied to the domain for good, so it is set once during the install. A different domain needs a new install.
How do I add more accounts?
Open registration is off. You create further accounts via SSH with the GoToSocial admin command, the same way the install created your own account.
