Why Matrix on Your Own Server?

Matrix is an open, decentralised chat protocol. With your own homeserver, accounts and rooms live on your server, and you can still talk to people on other Matrix servers – with no central provider.

Synapse is the best-known Matrix homeserver and works with all common Matrix apps, Element first among them. Because Matrix addresses look like @name:your-domain, you enter a domain pointing to your server during the install; it cannot be changed afterwards. The panel sets up HTTPS with a Let’s Encrypt certificate and has Synapse serve the .well-known data itself, so apps and other servers find your homeserver on port 443. Open registration is disabled; the install creates your admin account with the username from the form and a generated password. You create further accounts via SSH with the Synapse command register_new_matrix_user or through the admin API. End-to-end encryption is handled by the apps, so encrypted messages are not stored on the server in plain text. If you join large public rooms, plan for more than the 1 GB RAM minimum.

Order a root server and point a domain to its IP

Pick Matrix (Synapse) under “Apps” in the panel, enter domain and admin name

In Element choose “Edit homeserver”, enter your domain and log in

Answers to the most important questions

Why is a domain required?
Every Matrix address ends in the homeserver’s name, for example @anna:your-domain.com. That is why the domain is fixed at install time and cannot be changed later – choose it carefully.
Which apps can I use?
Any Matrix app, for example Element in the browser, on desktop, Android and iOS. When logging in, choose “Edit homeserver” and enter your domain.
Can I chat with people on other Matrix servers?
Yes. Your server is federated: you can join rooms on other servers and invite users from there as if you were on the same server.
How do I create accounts for other people?
Open registration is off for security reasons. You create further accounts via SSH with register_new_matrix_user in the Synapse container or through the Synapse admin API.
