Why PrestaShop on Your Own Server?

A shop needs resources it shares with no one and full control over modules, PHP and database. On your root server in Frankfurt you pay no revenue share to a shop platform – just the server.

PrestaShop is an open-source shop system with catalogue, variants, stock, customer accounts, payment and shipping methods and a large range of modules and themes. The panel installs PrestaShop 8 with its own MySQL database and runs the setup automatically – with German as the language and Germany as the country; the install folder is no longer reachable afterwards. The back office lives at /admin-shop, where you log in with your e-mail address and the password the panel generates. Ideally enter a domain right at install time: the shop then runs on HTTPS with a Let’s Encrypt certificate from the start. A domain cannot be added through the panel later, because PrestaShop stores its address during the install. Legal texts, payment providers and tax settings you then set up yourself in the back office.

Can I add the domain later?
Not through the panel – PrestaShop stores its address during the install. So enter the domain right away and point its A record to your server beforehand.
What resources does a PrestaShop shop need?
The app requires at least 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of storage. With many products, images and modules, a larger package is the better choice.
Does PrestaShop have licence fees?
No, PrestaShop is open source. Costs only arise for paid modules or themes you choose yourself.
How do I back up my shop?
Create server backups in the panel regularly, especially before module or version updates. Via SSH you can also export the MySQL database.
