Why Your Own Reverse Proxy?

One central entry point for all your services: you manage domains, certificates and access rules in one place in the browser instead of maintaining config files by hand.

Nginx Proxy Manager puts a web interface on top of the Nginx web server. You create proxy hosts that forward a domain to a service – on the same server, on another server in the private network or anywhere on the internet. You issue Let’s Encrypt certificates per host with one click, and they renew automatically. On top come redirects, access lists with password protection and TCP/UDP streams. The panel installs the app and creates the admin account with your e-mail address; you reach the interface on port 81. Because Nginx Proxy Manager uses ports 80 and 443, for further apps on the same server you do not use their own domain option but route the domain through the proxy manager.

Answers to the most important questions

Can I run other one-click apps behind it?
Yes. Install the other apps without their own domain – they then run on their own port – and create a proxy host in Nginx Proxy Manager that forwards your domain to that port. The apps’ domain option would also need ports 80/443 and collide.
How are the SSL certificates issued?
Via Let’s Encrypt. The domain has to point to your server via DNS; Nginx Proxy Manager then requests the certificate and renews it automatically.
Can I reach services on other servers?
Yes. A proxy host can point to any reachable address – especially handy with a private network between your root servers, so the services behind it do not have to be publicly reachable.
How do I secure the interface?
The admin interface runs on port 81. You can restrict it to your IP addresses in the firewall or put it behind a proxy host with an access list.
