Why Metabase on Your Own Server?

Your business figures never leave your server: Metabase queries your databases directly and shows the results in the browser. The open-source edition has no licence fee per user.

Metabase connects to databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB or SQLite and turns them into questions, charts and dashboards. In the graphical query builder you filter and group data with a few clicks; if you know SQL, you write queries directly. You share dashboards with your team or, once a mail server is set up, have them sent by e-mail on a schedule. The panel installs the open-source edition of Metabase, uses the one-time setup token itself and creates your admin account with your e-mail address and a generated password – so nobody can take over the setup page before you. The interface is set to German, which you can change in the settings, and anonymous usage tracking is switched off. If you like, the panel sets up your domain with HTTPS, now or later. Because Metabase runs on Java, plan for at least 2 GB of RAM.

Answers to the most important questions

Do I need to know SQL?
No. With the graphical query builder you ask questions with a few clicks. SQL is optional for when you want to write more complex reports.
Which data sources can I connect?
Among others PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB and SQLite. The database must be reachable from the root server – ideally with a read-only user.
Where does Metabase store questions and dashboards?
In the built-in H2 database in a Docker volume on your server. Back it up with the server backups in the panel; for larger teams you can move to PostgreSQL as the application database with root access.
How is it different from Grafana?
Grafana is made mainly for time series and monitoring. Metabase is aimed at analysing business data such as revenue, orders or customers and is meant for people without a technical background, too.
