In Detail

Why Healthchecks on Your Own Server?

A backup that quietly stops running is often only noticed when you need it. Healthchecks catches exactly that – and on your own server with no limit on the number of checks.

Healthchecks works the other way round from classic monitoring: every check gets its own ping URL that your cron job, backup script or service calls once its work is done. If the ping stays away longer than configured, Healthchecks raises the alarm, for example via webhook, Slack, ntfy or e-mail. You enter schedules as an interval or as a cron expression, and with start and failure pings you also see how long a job ran and whether it failed. During the install the panel creates your admin account with your e-mail address and a generated password; open sign-ups are switched off. If you like, Healthchecks runs on your domain with HTTPS, and the ping URLs then use that address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most important questions

How do I hook up a cron job?
You append a call to the ping URL to your command, for example with curl. If the job completes, the ping arrives; if it stays away, you get notified.
How does it differ from Uptime Kuma?
Uptime Kuma polls your services from the outside. Healthchecks waits for your jobs to report in themselves – ideal for cron jobs and backups that have no web page.
Which notifications are available?
Healthchecks comes with many integrations, such as webhooks, Slack, ntfy and e-mail. Some of them, including e-mail and Telegram, need extra credentials when self-hosted, for example an SMTP server, which you add to the configuration as root.
Should Healthchecks run on a different server?
Yes, ideally on its own. If the monitored server goes down, the ping stays away – and Healthchecks can only warn you if it keeps running itself.
