In Detail
Why Checkmk on Your Own Server?
Monitoring that runs on the very systems it is meant to watch stays silent when things go wrong. On its own server in Frankfurt, Checkmk is separate from the rest of your infrastructure – and the Raw Edition is open source under the GPL, with no licence costs.
Checkmk monitors Linux and Windows servers via an agent and network devices via SNMP, and it discovers the existing services automatically when you add a host. Thresholds, e-mail notifications and history graphs are set up in the web interface. The panel installs Checkmk Raw Edition 2.4 as a Docker container with a site called “cmk” and sets the password of the “cmkadmin” user to a generated password you can view in the panel. This app has no domain or HTTPS option: you reach Checkmk via your server’s IP address, port 8038 and the path /cmk/. The Raw Edition is the open-source variant; features of the commercial editions are not included. 2 GB of RAM is enough to get started; with many hosts and services you should choose a larger package.
