Why Duplicati on Your Own Server?

The server backups in the panel back up your server with us. With Duplicati you additionally keep encrypted copies of selected folders at a place of your choice – for example with another storage provider.

Duplicati is open-source backup software with a web interface. It splits your files into blocks, only transfers changes after the first run, encrypts everything with AES-256 before uploading and keeps several versions according to a retention rule. As a destination you choose S3-compatible storage, SFTP, WebDAV, Google Drive, OneDrive and many more. The panel installs Duplicati so that your server’s entire file system is mounted read-only under /source – Duplicati can back up everything but change nothing there. The web interface is protected by the generated password from the panel, and the stored settings are encrypted. If you like, the panel sets up your domain with HTTPS, now or later. 512 MB of RAM is enough; storage space is needed mainly at the backup destination.

Answers to the most important questions

How is this different from the server backups in the panel?
The server backups in the panel back up the whole server with us. Duplicati backs up selected folders and files, encrypts them and stores them at an external destination of your choice – the two complement each other.
Who can read my backups?
Only someone who knows the passphrase you set when creating the backup. Keep it safe: without it the data cannot be restored.
Can I back up databases with Duplicati?
Duplicati backs up files. For consistent database backups, create a dump via cron job, for example with mysqldump or pg_dump, and let Duplicati back up that folder.
How do I restore files?
In the web interface you choose the backup, version and files. Because the server is mounted read-only, you restore to a writable folder such as /data and then copy the files to their place via SSH.
