Why LibreChat on Your Own Server?

Your chat history and uploaded files live on your server in Frankfurt instead of in someone else’s account. Instead of a subscription per person, you pay for the models by usage through your own API keys.

LibreChat is an open-source chat interface in the style of ChatGPT that brings several AI providers together under one roof. In the model menu you switch between OpenAI, Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini, create agents, upload files and search past conversations. The panel installs LibreChat with MongoDB as its database and Meilisearch for search. The install creates your account right away with your e-mail address and a generated password; open sign-up stays closed, so no stranger can create an account. Each person enters their own API keys in the interface. If you like, the panel sets up your domain with HTTPS, now or later. Plan for at least 2 GB of RAM.

Answers to the most important questions

Which AI models can I use?
OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini) are prepared; you enter the API key for each in the interface yourself. With root access you can add more providers and custom endpoints in LibreChat’s configuration.
Does the language model run on the server itself?
No, LibreChat is the interface; answers come from the providers whose API keys you store. That is why 2 GB of RAM is enough – local models would need far more resources.
How do other people get access?
Open sign-up is switched off. You create more accounts via SSH with LibreChat’s “create-user” command, or you deliberately enable sign-up in the configuration.
How do I back up my chats?
Chats, files and settings live in Docker volumes on your server. Back them up with the server backups in the panel; you can also export individual conversations in LibreChat.
