As already announced with much fanfare, our move to the new data center of Maincubes One GmbH took place on 29 November at 1:00 a.m. In this blog post we want to explain our reasons for the move, list the advantages the new data center brings you, and cover the complications that came up during the move.
Maincubes opened back in September 2017 and already attracted a lot of interest at the time. Maincubes isn't just green on the outside, for instance — it also runs every server exclusively on green electricity. Certified TÜV Level 2-3 status guarantees consistent server security. Various certificates (ISO27001:2013, ISAE 3402, ÖkoPLUS..) back this up as well. The move also let us set up our own infrastructure on site.
The move was no walk in the park, though, as our customers could follow live on our Discord server. First, the move was prepared at the old data center, First-Colo. There, old servers were removed and the IP addresses were transferred from First-Colo to the Maincubes data center. The drive to Maincubes and the installation of the servers went without any problems. Unfortunately there was a misconfiguration on the switches, which wasn't fixed until around 8 a.m. Once the configuration was finished, we could finally start building our own CEPH cluster and migrating all customers to the new cluster.
As a customer, though, aside from positive effects like an uninterrupted power supply, you shouldn't notice any difference. Server IP addresses stayed the same, all data was preserved, and we continue to use the popular Arbor DDoS protection at the new data center as well.
